Below is an overview of DVD authoring in general and the various DVD authoring services we provide at StamenMedia.

If we're going to be working together and you plan on designing your own menus, working with a designer other than Stamenmedia, or if you're just interested, be sure to check out our DVD Menu Design Guidelines.

Our DVD Authoring Rates page gives you an idea of what you are in for as far as costs go but feel free to contact us to discuss your project and your budget.

Overview

Whether you want your DVD to just play and have no menu at all, an interactive, full-featured DVD, or a hybrid DVD, we make it happen for you with a meticulous attention to detail.

Creating a DVD basically consists of four phases*:

Encoding   Converting source material into DVD compatible video/audio files
Authoring   Creating Menus, navigation and link structure
Multiplexing or Building   Creating the files for the disc
Writing   Writing the files to a DVD-R or a DLT for replication

*A Hybrid DVD has a whole other aspect to it and a DVD-ROM is a different animal.
We use Macromedia Director to author DVD-ROMs and the DVD-ROM portion of Hybrid DVDs.
If you are interested in making a Hybrid DVD or a DVD-ROM, call us to discuss your project.

Encoding

The encoding quality, or data rate, is determined by how much material there is in relation to how much space there is on the DVD.

There are many types of DVDs but only 2 types are typically used for commercial DVDs:
DVD-5: 4.7 gigs
DVD-9: 8.5 gigs

MPEG Encoding

We calculate the best possible encoding quality which is especially important when authoring for DVD-5. Depending on what is important to you, audio rates can be lowered to squeeze out more video quality. It all depends on the footage to space ratio and what is important to you and your project.

Audio is encoded in dolby AC3. The quality is determined the same way as the video, by calculating material versus space. We can lower or up the quality of the audio in relation to the video depending on the importance of sound quality to you and your project.
We encode 2 channel stereo up to 5.1 surround sound. For surround sound, the client must provide the five sound files to be encoded.

Besides high quality encoding, there are other things you may want to consider to make your project look great. We offer telecine style color correction as well as magic bullet services.

Every professional video and/or film production that you see has been color corrected. It can be to actually correct overexposure, underexposure or any other problem with the footage or to give a project a certain look or style.

Color correction and any adjustments also depend on the medium which the final product will be delivered. Here, we're talking about making DVDs. There are different considerations when color correcting for DVD than, say, film or any analog master like BetaSP or VHS. Adjusting white and black levels and saturation correctly to make the footage look as it should when its on DVD. All Hollywood movies are specifically color corrected for DVD. Your project can be too and without the Hollywood Budget.

The Magic Bullet is revolutionary process used to give video footage that "Film Look" that so many of us desire. "The cost of video, the look of film" - doesn't that sound grand?

We can also letterbox your project, adjust black levels or any other pre-authoring and encoding adjustments that need to be made.

Multiplexing or Building

DVD Creation  DVDs consist of 2 folders, Video_TS and Audio_TS.

The Video_TS folder contains presentation files (.VOB) and navigation Files (.IFO)
There are also .BUP files which are back ups of the .IFO files

On a hybrid DVD or DVD-ROM, there can be many kinds of files just as on a CD-ROM. If it is a hybrid DVD, these files will be ignored by set top box DVD players and only recognized when the DVD is played on a computer.

Writing

After being built, the DVD is then written to a DVD-R or a DLT (Digital Linear Tape).

  • DLTs are the industry standard for replication facilities as DVD-Rs often contain data errors
  • DVD-9 can only be written to DLTs - there is no such thing as burning a DVD-9

We can also write your pre-authored DVD to DLT.

If you have questions about our services or about DVD authoring, see our DVD Authoring Frequently Asked Questions. Hopefully, you'll find it helpful and informative.
